I'm a young, vivacious woman with terrible health. I'd like to blame genetics and situations beyond my control for this, but I know it is partly my fault. I decided I was sick of feeling like "twenty five is the new fifty two," so I changed my diet and lifestyle to help fix my declining health. No one my age should have a blood pressure of 190/110. This is where I write about it.

(So insanely tired, and I think I am getting sick. This is reinforced by the fact that my coworker across the hall is also sick.)

I get home an immediately hit the couch and pass out for an hour. I am awoken by the fact that my phone keeps ringing off the hook, so I give up on napping and return some of the phone calls.

I have kind of a complex about my arms, so I do a few different exercises with 5lb dumbells while I play a song (about 4-5 minutes) every day. I was so tired that I found this rather difficult. Even showering was a chore.

My room mate, Renee, came home at about 9pm, and we went to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. It was nice to finally connect with her, because we rarely see each other these days. Dining out makes me nervous because I hate not being able to find calorie counts for things! Unfortunately for me, I found it online this morning:

9:45pm- Cheesecake Factory
2 Pieces of Dark (Wheat?) Bread
Guacamole and Tortilla Chips (shared with Renee)Fresh Vegetable Salad w/Pomegranate Dressing on the side

Dinner was really enjoyable. Its funny that we live together, but really haven’t seen one another for weeks now. I love Renee to death.

Arrived home after stopping at Walgreens to pick up Emergen-C and Snackin’ Flax, and was entirely ready to go to bed.

11:00pm
1- 500MG Metronidazole tablet
2- 25MG Topiramate tablet
2- 350MG Echinecea Capsules

Then my phone rang, and Peter wanted to catch up for an hour. I was OK with that, because I haven’t talked to him in awhile. He had a really entertaining story to share about a date he went on that resulted in a girl making him take her through the drive-thru at McDondals for dinner.

“I don’t mean to sound judgemental, Leah, but she ordered two Filet-o-Fish. TWO of them!”

How fitting. I had nightmares about fish sandwiches that night.

I am blaming Nine for my cookie craving, because he got me started on them last night and I have been wanting one ever since. I am justifying it for several reasons:

  • I only ate half
  • The soup was healthy, low-fat, and I didn’t even finish it
  • It contained walnuts, which are good for my blood pressure

I should have listened to my instincts that told me to throw away the stupid baguette portion right away. I forgot that they give it to you, or else I would have just told them I didn’t need it.

A little over two more hours of work. I am supposed to go work out with Andy tonight, but I only nabbed about four hours of sleep last night, which is leaving me feeling quite zombie-riffic right now. Meh.

Be a (Good) Fatty

If you’re anything like me, you fear the word “fat” more than you dread the notion of having to represent Lindsay Lohan in court.

Perhaps there may be no good excuse for LiLo’s moonshine addiction, but there is such thing as “friendly fat.”

I want you to meet my lovely friend, Omega-3 Fatty Acid (and no, Lindsay; you don’t tootally trip balls off of it)

Let me give you the skinny on my favorite fatty:

Omega-3 Fatty Acids are a “family of similar” unsaturated acids. The most important ones being ALA, DHA and EPA. They are considered essential for good health.

Not only do you need Omega-3 Fatty Acids (which I am going to shorten to O3FA’s from now on, because… I said so) for your BRAIN to function properly, but research shows that they provide the following health benefits:

  • reduced risk of heart disease
  • lower bad cholesterol levels
  • reduced blood pressure
  • lower triglyceride levels (for diabetics)
  • better mood (aided in depression and bipolar treatment)

Lack of O3FA’s in your diet can result in some crummy symptoms, including  fatigue (read- really freaking tired), dry skin, mood swings or depression, heart problems or poor circulation.

This might explain why my hands and feet are perpetually cold.

Your body cannot make O3FA’s on it’s own; you have to get them through food. Here is a quick list of some delicious places to get your fat fix:

  • Flax (the BEST source!!!)
  • Walnuts
  • Pecans

For those of you who like to eat the flesh of living things, you can also get it from seafood, and even seal oil. However, the last option is fairly illegal, so I would suggest having a nice salmon fillet before you try to claim you were clubbing seals to lower your cholesterol.

If you really hate fish, you can take a fish oil supplement.

Now when someone calls you a fatty, you can smile and say, “thank you!” After you kick them in the jugular, of course.

I would like to congratulate myself for doing considerably better Wednesday than I did on Tuesday.

I would like to say I deserve a cookie, but let’s not even go there! I’ll just stare at the new Bebe Fall Lookbook, and that will be enough to make me forsake cookies.

Mmm, deliciously tacky, yet fashionable leopard print. Hello, lucious over-the-knee boots. Decadent feather caplet…

…want.

9.8.10 Lunch
12:30pm
I am not feeling very hungry, but my stomach is doing it’s best impersonation of a doped-up Ozzy Ozzbourne right now. Honestly, I wouldn’t me surprised if I heard it gurgle, “Sharon! Where’s my burrito?!”
I am on an antibiotic right now that says one of the side-effects are loss of appetite. I remember having to take this a few years back (or what I think is the same medication) and it left a taste in my mouth that I can only liken to sucking on a bag full of dirty pennies. Would you be hungry when everything you ate tasted like metal?
So far, no used coin taste in my mouth. I think I’m just tired. I decided to eat the other half of my Vegan fajitas I made yesterday morning. Someone at work brought in home-made salsa, so I put two tablepoons of that on top.

I am just guesstimating the added calories/fat calories from the salsa, because there were a few little pieces of avocado mixed in.

Why I adore GK Snacks trail mix:
The original mix is fantastically delicious, and good for you (save for the M&Ms, but they are a nice “reward” treat). The raisins are HUGE, and there is a good amount of almonds and cashews in it; not just peanuts.
The best part? The plastic jar is reuseable, so I can put my own mix in it and store it.
I also really like the cap because it pours out the perfect serving portion of nuts. I like to eat 1/4c of alominds a day, and all I have to do is pour them into the cap for easy measurement.
Thank you, GK snacks, for making my life a little easier, and a whole lot tastier.

i’m doing a fruit and veggie cleanse today

impossiblestandards:

i really love them, my mom did it with me last time. i feel like my body needs a jumpstart and all the fiber in fruits will give me that jump start.

rules:

  • eat as much as you want, as long as it’s a fruit/veggie
  • fruit juice does NOT count
  • you can drink water plain or with benefiber for some extra fiber, or green tea. whatever floats your boat
  • do NOT exercise because you will not have enough energy to do so

message me if you’re gonna do it, with your results or just some support. :)

I think I will try doing this today, as I really need a “fresh” start to getting back on-track with my diet.

Sensa Food Sprinkles: Bullshit Fairy Dust for your Food

I recently read an article about a new “appetite suppressant” called Sensa. These are odorless, flavorless, granules that you dust on your food. This simple act claims to magically melt the lard right off your body, no exercise or special dieting required!

Wow! Just what every stagnant, overweight, un-motivated human really wants to hear; an easy way out. So what you’re saying is along with the usual dumping of parmesan cheese and hot pepper flakes, I can just toss on these Sensa Sprinkles, and this entire pizza I am about to consume will have absolutely no calories in it, right?! Yeah, and I’m sure Elvis and TuPac really DO enjoy strawberry margaritas together in a remote trailerpark nestled in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Dr. Alan Hirsch, the developer of Sensa, claims that these “Tasteants” work by manipulating your body’s appetite-control center. It doesn’t go into great detail, but somewhere along this trail of horse manure, I fell under the impression that they somehow work to either inhibit, or enhance, your sense of taste and smell to “trick” you into putting down that trough of Five-Alarm-Chili. Who is this guy? The god-forsaken Criss Angel of dietary supplements? Give me a break.

Despite the fact that everything about this glutton glitter screams, “marketing scheme to rape you of your disability check.” I looked into the research done on this product. This statement was a dead give-away to why I would never use it:

“The theory behind the product is simple. It’s obvious that we eat too much, but why?  It turns out that’s the way our brains are programmed.  Throughout our evolutionary history, food has been scarce, so in order to ensure survival, humans have been conditioned to eat as much as they can whenever food is available. Unfortunately, when food is abundant and rich in calories, as it is today, the results can be ugly.

Enter Dr. Alan Hirsch, intrepid doctor and scientist whose lifelong specialty has been to understand how our senses, and in particular, smell and taste affect the brain’s functioning. Dr. Hirsch noticed that many of his patients who had lost their sense of smell and taste due to illness or accident experienced rapid weight gain.  Certain smells and tastes seemed to be acting on the brain to control the appetite.”

Back in the days of loin cloths and uggah-buggah, we humans foraged for food. Sometimes it was scarce, so when you found a baby brachiasaur, you ate that whole damn thing. Why? Because you may have been really hungry, but this doesn’t mean these people didn’t keep eating regardless of the fact that they felt full.

The human brain has little receptors in it that get messages from your stomach that say, “hey whoa Charlie! You’re onto your seventh Chalupa when I told you that we were full at three!” This is what separates “appetite” from “hunger.” You’re stomach doesn’t need to feel jam-packed to satisfy your hunger, but you keep shoveling food in to reach that capacity because of your appetite. Admit it; you know when you’re full. There are many times I have kept eating long past the point of satiation. You don’t need these sprinkles to tell you that! You just need to be honest with yourself.

Also, I’ve lost my sense of taste before. I was on a short-term medication that made everything tasteless, and even metallic. It made me lose weight because I didn’t enjoy eating food, and so I just ate what I needed to get by. The fact that his “sense-less” patients all gained weight would have nothing to do with that fact. It just seems rather backwards.

In short, you would be better off sprinkling crack-cocaine on your Big Mac in hopes of losing weight than these Sensa sprinkles. When I was little, the fact that I believed in the Easter Bunny didn’t make him real, so believing that these “tasteants” will melt your fat off is just going to render you moneyless, and still fat.
